The continuous stretch of wireless access has been christened Wellington's "HotZone". It is claimed to be the first such zone created on a city's highest-traffic street anywhere in the world. The project was financed with the help of a $90,000 grant from Wellington City Council. Mayor Kerry Prendergast says it will boost e-business and e-government in the capital and enable "creative" workers to keep in constant contact with others and with information sources. The service was officially launched on Friday (5 December 2003). Stephen Bell |
